Rached Ghannouchi, who has been detained in Tunisia since 2023, was discharged from the hospital where he had been receiving treatment since July 29 and returned to Mornaguia Prison.
Ghannouchi’s defense team said he had been completely isolated during his nearly three-week stay in the hospital. The team said Ghannouchi was not allowed to meet with his lawyers or family and was prevented from following current affairs through the means available to other detainees.
He went on a five-day hunger and medication strike
The defense team said its requests to visit Ghannouchi and check on his health had yielded no result. The team said Ghannouchi began a five-day hunger and medication strike after being isolated and deprived of his basic rights.
Ghannouchi ended the strike at the request of the team monitoring his health, the defense team said. It added that he was sent back to prison yesterday evening after his hospital stay.
Defense team accuses authorities of violating the law
The defense team argued that preventing Ghannouchi from communicating with his lawyers and family, as well as depriving him of other rights granted to detainees, constituted “physical and psychological abuse.”
The team said these practices violated Tunisian law and the protections for prisoners guaranteed under international agreements to which the country is a party. The defense team held the relevant authorities legally responsible for the violations and said it reserved the right to initiate the necessary legal proceedings over potential harm to Ghannouchi’s health.
He is standing trial in several cases
Ghannouchi, 85, is standing trial in several cases, including charges of “conspiracy against the state” and “terrorism.” Ghannouchi and his defense team reject the charges, arguing that they are political.
