Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Levent Gümrükçü met with ambassadors and representatives of Ibero-American Conference member countries serving in Ankara after Türkiye’s application for Associate Observer status was accepted. The meeting was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Türkiye’s application for Associate Observer status was accepted at the Ibero-American Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on September 24 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan had submitted the official application in a letter sent to the organization’s Secretary-General Andrés Allamand on July 3.

Angola and India’s applications were also accepted at the same meeting, alongside Türkiye’s. The decision is expected to become official during the 30th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, to be held in Madrid on November 4-5.
The Ibero-American Conference brings together 22 countries from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Countries including Germany, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Morocco and Hungary also hold Associate Observer status. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it aims to deepen cooperation with conference members as part of its policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean.
