Kadıköy Anatolian Imam Hatip High School’s KİTT-TURAN team won Türkiye’s national title in the Rotary-Wing category of the TEKNOFEST Inter-High School Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Competition for the third time. After winning the championship in 2021 and 2022, the team claimed the cup again this year.
The students prepared for the competition in Malatya by working on the drone’s design, production, software and flight operations. The vehicle was designed to carry two different payloads and release them at designated points.
Work began months in advance
School Principal Nazmi Yıldırım said the achievement was not solely the result of recent work, but was rooted in the school’s long-established history. Yıldırım said students were supported in both academic studies and club activities in line with their interests and abilities.
Yıldırım said the students helped train younger students who came after them, adding that this had become a tradition within the school. He said the team’s success was the result of sincere, dedicated and determined work.
Yıldırım said the school’s graduate, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Faruk Akşit, was giving a conference when the students returned to the school with the cup. Describing the students’ entrance into the conference hall with the cup as an exciting moment for the school, Yıldırım called the achievement a shared source of pride.
Graduates support the team
Mücahit Çevik, deputy principal and KİTT-TURAN team supervisor, said they were the only school to win Türkiye’s national title three times in the same TEKNOFEST category. Çevik said the students carried out most of the work themselves, while older students trained those in lower grades.
Çevik said the team prepared for the competition for approximately eight to nine months, adding that the students continued working in the school’s workshop during the summer holiday. He said the students carried out test flights at the competition site for a week and continued working until late at night, adding that this intensive effort was rewarded with a top ranking.
Çevik said graduate students continued to take an interest in the team, provide training and help new members. He said the achievement was supported by the mentor-apprentice relationship established at the school.
Çevik said a technology department had opened at the school this year, adding that it was created in light of the students’ achievements in competitions and in the technology field. He said the department admitted students from the top 1 percent and that they hoped to achieve better results in the coming term.
Teachers witnessed the students’ intensive work
Muhammed Ali Atalay, a vocational subject teacher who accompanied the students at the competition, said the achievement belonged to the students and that the teachers were there to support them. Atalay said the students continued working until late at night despite being advised to rest.
Atalay said the students continued working on the drone during the competition. He said their determination and commitment formed the foundation of their success.
Team members describe the competition process
Ahmet Tuna Alegöz, a 12th-grade student and one of the KİTT-TURAN team captains, said the club was established in 2018. Alegöz said the team participated in the TEKNOFEST Inter-High School Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Competition for the first time in 2021 and won the Rotary-Wing category, adding that they repeated the achievement in 2022.
Alegöz said he was responsible for avionics, software and mechanical systems on the team, adding that they won first place in the same category this year as well.
Mehmet Akif Ergişi, an 11th-grade student, said students who joined the club received training from graduates in electronics, software and design at the beginning of the school year. Ergişi said students who successfully completed the training were admitted to the club, adding that the team continued improving its vehicle after applying for the competition.
Ergişi said the team was given five to six days for flights during the competition week and had four flight attempts. He said two different tasks were completed during the competition, adding that although the vehicle was technically capable, the competition process was tiring and stressful.
The drone identifies targets and releases payloads
Ramazan Salih Altınsoy, a 10th-grade student, said the drone was first designed, after which the electronics team arranged subsystems such as the battery and motors. He said manual test flights were conducted after the vehicle was made ready for flight, followed by the transition to autonomous flight using software.
Altınsoy said the drone identified targets and released its payloads after testing. He said they encountered technical problems with the motor and circuit connections before the competition, adding that winning the cup was a significant source of pride added to the team’s previous achievements.
Ahmet Azhari, an 11th-grade student, said they were working as imam hatip high school students to develop science and technology together. Azhari said they aimed to contribute to the country’s efforts through unmanned vehicles and unmanned systems.
