North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the new Yalu River bridge and traveled to China’s border city of Dandong on Saturday, October 24. The visit took place for the opening of the bridge linking Dandong with North Korea’s city of Sinuiju, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry and China’s official Xinhua news agency.
The bridge, which opened after more than a decade of delays, is expected to play an important role in transporting the heavy equipment, raw materials and energy products North Korea needs.

During the visit, Kim met with Wang Huning, regarded as China’s fourth-highest-ranking official, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Kim also visited a memorial dedicated to Chinese soldiers who fought in the Korean War. The visit came ahead of the October 25 anniversary of China’s first major victory in the Korean War.
The trip, Kim’s first visit to China in the past year, came after unverified rumors last week that Kim had died. Analysts are debating whether North Korea’s deepening military ties with Russia have reduced Pyongyang’s dependence on Beijing.
