Türkiye’s ambassador to Seoul, Fatih Yıldız, made his first visit after officially taking up his post to the Turkish martyrs’ section in the South Korean city of Busan. Accompanied by embassy staff, Yıldız laid a wreath and placed flowers on the graves.
“We are grateful to our Korean War martyrs and veterans, who, through their sacrifices, laid the foundations of the existing brotherhood and strategic partnership between Türkiye and the Republic of Korea,” the embassy said.

462 Turkish soldiers rest in Busan
The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan holds the graves of 462 Turkish soldiers in a section known as the Pusan Turkish Martyrs’ Cemetery. Türkiye was among the countries that sent troops under U.N. command to the 1950-1953 Korean War and lost nearly a thousand soldiers in the conflict.
In 2025, the remains of four Turkish soldiers identified at laboratories in the United States were brought to Korea and handed over to Turkish officials, some 75 years after the war.

From Khartoum to Seoul
Yıldız was moved from the embassy in Khartoum to Seoul as part of 26 ambassadorial appointments announced by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in June. A career diplomat, he previously served as ambassador to Iraq from 2017 to 2021 and to Sudan from August 2024. During his Busan trip, Yıldız also met students of the Turkish department at Busan University of Foreign Studies.
