Speaking at the World Armenian Summit in Yerevan, Armenia’s Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan advocated normalizing relations with Türkiye and criticized the security doctrine of dependence on Russia that had been maintained in his country for many years.
Simonyan said he disagreed with a participant’s view that Armenia should strengthen itself militarily before normalizing relations with Türkiye. “We acted with this logic and this mindset, and that is exactly what brought us to the small Armenia you referred to,” he said.
“For 70 years, we were indoctrinated with the deception that we must rely on Russia or the Turks would eat us. This has nothing to do with reality,” Simonyan said. He also said Armenia needed to strengthen its defense capabilities, but expressed doubt that military deterrence alone could ensure long-term security.
“We must not give anyone a reason for war. This is our most important security guarantee,” Simonyan said. He stressed that Armenia should participate more actively in regional transportation projects, political formats and economic cooperation, and cited the similarity between the two countries’ positions on the Palestinian issue as an example of common ground.
