The weather phenomenon known as "El Nino" develops when sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise above normal levels, impacting the global climate. El Nino, known for increasing global temperatures, is expected to raise drought risks in some regions while causing heavy rainfall and extreme weather events in others.
If El Nino is strong, it can break temperature records worldwide and increase the frequency of extreme weather events. The World Meteorological Organization announced an 80% chance of El Nino occurring between June and August, which has the potential to raise global temperatures.
Due to rising sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, the likelihood of a "Super El Nino" from the second half of this year is increasing. It is estimated that this condition could last until at least November with a probability close to or above 90%. Accordingly, temperatures in Turkey are also expected to be above seasonal averages during the summer months.
Cengiz Çelik, Weather Forecast Specialist at the General Directorate of Meteorology under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, stated that El Nino does not directly affect Turkey but causes indirect effects due to its influence on global atmospheric circulation.
Çelik explained that the atmosphere works as a whole and systems like El Nino and La Nina in the Pacific Ocean can alter temperature and precipitation patterns in different parts of the world.
He noted that El Nino's impact on Turkey is seen as a slight increase in temperatures and precipitation levels somewhat below seasonal norms. Çelik emphasized that the likelihood of El Nino being effective this year is high. He added that precipitation during the summer is generally expected to be around seasonal averages, with rainfall decreasing across the country starting in July.
Çelik indicated that temperatures in most parts of Turkey will be 1-2 degrees above seasonal averages in July and August, and this trend is expected to continue into September.
The temperature increase will be more noticeable especially in the interior regions. Çelik advised citizens to follow the long-term forecast maps available on the General Directorate of Meteorology's website.
Referring to above-average precipitation in the early months of the year, Çelik said, "Since the end of January, we have been receiving rainfall above seasonal norms for about four months. We expect precipitation to be around seasonal averages in July and August. Since rainfall amounts are already quite low during this period, we will gradually transition into the dry season."
