Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry issued a message of congratulations for Azerbaijan’s Day of Restoration of Independence, marked on Oct. 18. “Happy 35th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of brotherly Azerbaijan!” the ministry said.
The graphic released with the message featured the Azerbaijani flag and Baku’s landmark Flame Towers, with greetings in Turkish alongside the Azerbaijani words “Müstəqilliyin Bərpası Günü,” or Day of Restoration of Independence.
“Two states, one nation”
AK Party spokesman Ömer Çelik also marked the day, saying, “We salute dear Azerbaijan with the motto ‘two states, one nation.’” He added that the brotherhood between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Ilham Aliyev symbolizes the eternal brotherhood between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan’s Supreme Soviet adopted the Constitutional Act on the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Oct. 18, 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing. Türkiye became the first country to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence, on Nov. 9, 1991.
Since 2021, Azerbaijan has celebrated Oct. 18 as the Day of Restoration of Independence and May 28, the anniversary of the 1918 Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, as Independence Day. The two countries raised their ties to the level of an alliance with the Shusha Declaration signed on June 15, 2021.
