British Ambassador to Türkiye Jennifer Anderson visited the coastal districts of Muğla province earlier this week, an area that draws large numbers of British tourists. Anderson thanked all officials who ensure the safety and well-being of British tourists, especially at the height of the tourist season, as well as her consular team.
In a video with Turkish subtitles about her visit, Anderson recalled that in past years she had swum in the waters of Marmaris, sailed on local boats and climbed the surrounding mountains. She said that during her visit she met local officials and consular teams to discuss how they could work together to ensure British nationals stay safe and understand and respect local laws and customs.
Talks with governor and mayor
On Oct. 12, Anderson visited Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık at his office, where they discussed Muğla’s tourism potential, British tourists’ interest in the region and cooperation between the two countries. Akbıyık said British citizens rank first among foreign visitors to Muğla and that the necessary measures have been taken so that British tourists and residents can stay safely in Marmaris and other resort areas.
The ambassador also visited Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü at his office. The talks covered the goal of extending Marmaris’ tourist season to 12 months, projects in culture, sports and sustainable tourism, and strengthening inter-agency cooperation so that holidaymakers can enjoy a safe, high-quality stay. Britain’s Honorary Consul in Marmaris, Doğan Tugay, also attended the visits.

11.5 million trips in 2025
Stressing that the U.K. and Türkiye also have a strong relationship in tourism, Anderson said 11.5 million trips were made between the two countries in 2025, 4.4 million of them by British tourists. She advised anyone planning a visit to Türkiye to check the U.K. government’s travel advice and follow the latest updates before setting off.
Anderson said the aim is to ensure that more British visitors can enjoy everything Türkiye has to offer safely and peacefully. She officially took up her post after presenting her credentials to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Sept. 8. She previously served as deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Ankara from 2017 to 2020.
