European affairs analyst Yannis Koutsomitis said in remarks to Israel-based i24NEWS that "highly sensitive developments" could occur in the Eastern Mediterranean in the coming months.
Koutsomitis based his prediction on expectations that Türkiye will pass through Parliament by the end of the year its law on maritime jurisdiction areas, known as the "Blue Homeland" doctrine. The analyst said, "Greek forces are on extremely high alert for developments that may occur from this point onward."
"We could see military activity after the US elections"
Koutsomitis claimed that some military activity could occur in the region after the US midterm elections in early November, saying that Greece is "very concerned" about steps Ankara could take to implement the maritime boundary agreement Türkiye signed with Libya.
What does the Blue Homeland law cover?
The 14-article bill is expected to establish a legal framework for Türkiye's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the Black Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean. The draft states that territorial waters in the Aegean will remain at 6 nautical miles, while the 12-nautical-mile limit will continue to apply in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. The Ministry of National Defence also announced in May that relevant institutions were conducting the final work on the text of the law.
The memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas signed by Türkiye and Libya in November 2019 is among the main issues contested by Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Koutsomitis made the assessment during a broadcast on i24NEWS discussing joint maritime exercises between Israel and Greece. The two countries also held a joint naval exercise in September involving Israeli missile boats and Greek frigates.
