U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had struck a commercial vessel attempting to breach the naval blockade on Iran in the Gulf of Oman. According to the command, a U.S. military aircraft fired precision munitions at the stern of the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged M/V Huda cargo ship, rendering it unable to navigate.
CENTCOM said the vessel, which had called at an Iranian port, was attempting to leave the region's waters and that its crew had tried several times to breach the blockade despite repeated warnings. The command said the crew had been instructed to evacuate the sections that would be targeted before the strike. CENTCOM also released footage of the operation.
According to CENTCOM, 147 commercial vessels changed course after complying with warnings under the blockade in place since July, while five commercial vessels that failed to comply were disabled. The command also announced that day that it had established a new task force called “Iron Gate” to prevent the transit of weapons and sanctioned materials through Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea.
Tensions in the region continued overnight. Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that two oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz along an unauthorized route had struck a naval mine. The United Arab Emirates National Guard also reported rescuing 22 crew members from a cargo ship that caught fire in the Gulf of Oman, saying all were in good condition.
